Au Gratin Potatoes And Ham

Directions

 

Step 1

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter (or spray with cooking spray) a 9x13 baking dish.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons Butter
  • 2 cups Onion, diced
  • 3 cups Ham, diced

Step 2

Heat butter in a large skillet. Add onions and cook until they turn translucent. Add ham and cook for 5 minutes or so until thoroughly heated. Remove from heat and set aside.

Ingredients

  • 1 12 cups Half-and-Half
  • 1 12 cups Heavy Cream

Step 3

Combine half-and-half and cream in a micro-wave safe container and heat until no longer cold. Do not allow to boil. NOTE: If you use a 4-cup Pyrex measuring cup as your container, it will make it easier to measure out and pour the mixture later on.

  • 14 cup Flour
  • Black Pepper, to taste

Step 4

Whisk the flour and pepper into the half-and-half and cream mixture and set aside. (You may add salt, but the cheese and ham are generally salty, so I do not.)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Cheddar Cheese, shredded
  • 1 cup Monterey Jack Cheese, shredded

Step 5

Combine the two cheeses. Set aside.

Ingredients

  • 3 pounds Russet or Yukon Gold Potatoes, washed thoroughly

Step 6

Slice potatoes into 1/8-inch slices (very thin).
 

Step 7

Layer 1/3 of the potato slices into the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle on 1/3 of the ham and onion mixture, then 1/3 of the cheese followed by 1/3 of the cream mixture. Repeat layering twice more, ending with the final sprinkling of cheese and pouring on the remainder of the cream mixture.
 

Step 8

Cover dish with foil that has been sprayed with cooking spray (to prevent it from sticking to the cheese) and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 20 minutes at least, or until hot and bubbly.
 

Step 9

Allow to rest for 10-15 minutes. Cut into squares and serve.
