Fragrant Herb Bread

  • 1 12 cups Milk, scalded
  • 4 tablespoons Sugar
  • 4 tablespoons Margarine
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon Poppy Seed
  • 1 tablespoon Dried Onion
  • 4 teaspoons Whole Caraway Seed
  • 2 teaspoons Dried Ground Sage
  • 3 teaspoons Salt

Step 1

After milk is scalded, add spices, herbs, salt, sugar & margarine while milk is still warm. stir & set aside to cool.


  • 2 Dry Yeast
  • 12 cup Warm Water
  • 2 Eggs, beaten
  • 6 cups Flour

Step 2

Add yeast to warm water. Add eggs. Beat into the milk mixture. Gradually beat in 4 1/2-5 cups flour, one cup at a time.

Step 3

Put 1 cup flour on work surface and dump dough onto it. Start kneading & knead until smooth, about 5 minutes. Put dough in large bowl, greased, Cover with a clean clothe & let rise until doubled in size. Punch down & knead again for a minute or so to make a smooth ball.

Step 4

Divide dough into 2 halves & place in 2 greased loaf pans. Cover loosely with a clean towel and let rise again to just above pans 30-60 minutes. Bake at 35- for 30-35 minutes. If not done & browning to much, lay a piece of foil over the loaves the last few minutes of baking. Brush tops with melted butter. Cool thoroughly.
