Gramps' BBQ Shrimp

This is an old recipe that relies on a hard-to-find ingredient. My mother recalls this recipe being a family favorite back in the 1950s, and it was a staple of my childhood visits to my grandparents' home. My grandfather was given the recipe by a friend from the Clifton Club, which still exists in Lakewood, OH.



  • 1 cup Durkees Famous Sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Dry Mustard
  • 1 dash Cayenne Pepper
  • 2 teaspoons Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire Sauce

Step 1

Mix all ingredients into a marinade. The Durkees sauce is the magic ingredient, found in the condiment aisle. It's an old brand, not available everywhere. See

Step 2

Reserve a bit of marinade if you'd like some as a side that hasn't been in contact with raw shrimp.


  • 2 pounds Shrimp, fresh, wild, shelled and de-veined
  • Bamboo Skewers

Step 3

Mix peeled and de-veined shrimp into marinade. Skewer shrimp onto bamboo skewers, using two skewers per row so the shrimp won't rotate when grilled.

Step 4

Grill over medium heat. A non-stick grilling surface can be used. Baste with additional marindade as skewers are turned.


  • 4 tablespoons Butter, melted

Step 5

Arrange skewers on platter and drizzle with melted butter.
