Soda Bread - Traditional Irish Style

Real Traditional Soda Bread is only made with flour, baking soda, salt and soured milk (buttermilk)



Step 1

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Lightly grease a large baking sheet.


  • 4 cups All-Purpose Flour
  • 4 tablespoons Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Soda
  • 1 tablespoon Baking Powder
  • 12 teaspoon Salt
  • 12 cup Softened Margarine
  • 1 cup Buttermilk
  • 1 Egg

Step 2

Mix together flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt and margarine. Stir in buttermilk and egg.

Step 3

Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead slightly. Form dough into a round and place on prepared baking sheet.


  • 14 cup Melted Butter
  • 14 cup Buttermilk

Step 4

Combine melted butter with buttermilk; brush loaf. Use a sharp knife to cut an 'X' into the top of the loaf.

Step 5

Bake until a toothpick inserted comes out clean, start checking after 30 minutes. Baking can take up to 45-50 minutes. You can continue to brush the loaf with the butter mixture while it bakes.
